ISO 42001 certification audit process
ISO 42001 is the first international standard for managing Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems responsibly. It provides a framework for establishing an AI Management System (AIMS) that addresses transparency, risk, ethics, security, and accountability across the AI lifecycle.
This standard helps organizations build and operate trustworthy AI systems, comply with emerging regulations, and align with global expectations for responsible innovation. Certification demonstrates that your AI practices are governed by clear policies, risk controls, and continuous oversight.
There are two audit stages that must be completed in order to achieve ISO 27701 certification.
01
Stage 1 Audit
Auditors assess your documented AI Management System (AIMS). This includes reviewing your policies for ethical use, accountability structures, data governance, impact assessments, and compliance with internal and external AI risk requirements.
02
Stage 2 Audit
This phase tests how well your AIMS is functioning in practice. Auditors examine evidence of how AI systems are deployed, governed, monitored, and improved over time—focusing on areas like transparency, bias mitigation, security, and continuous evaluation.
